Jebao 502 & 503 External Aquarium Filter
Fitting Instructions
1. Remove the filter and accessories from the box and check that all parts are inside as described on the box.
2. Carefully unclip the four lid housing clips. Gently push them upwards to free them from the pump lid. Remove the lid and pump unit by slowly lifting it upwards. There is a rubber sealing ring which attaches to the intake pipe of the cannister to give a water tight fit to the pump lid - do not loose this.
3. The 502 external filter has two baskets and the 503 external filter has three. Both are supplied with carbon foam and filter wool media. Ceramic filter media rings are also recommended but are not supplied as standard.
4. Remove the filter wool and pull out the media trays one by one using the retractable handles. Remove and wash the filter media throughly with clean water before replacing
- 502 - carbon foam in bottom tray and filter wool in top tray.
- 503 - Ceramic media in bottom tray, carbon foam in middle tray and filter wool in top tray).
(Do not overfill the media trays and ensure that the flow through the inlet pipe is clear of any media).
Place each of the media trays back into the cannister. Make sure that the bottom tray is firmly positioned onto the support frame at the bottom of the cannister and that all of the media trays are correctly stacked and aligned with the intake pipe. Ensure that the rubber seal is refitted onto the intake pipe.
5. Replace the pump lid onto the cannister housing. Make sure that the rubber sealing ring on the pump lid is sitting correctly onto the intake pipe and is not twisted.
Now carefully place the pump lid on top of the cannister so that it is aligned with the intake pipe protruding through the media trays.
Once correctly aligned push the pump lid down and secure it with the lid clips.
6. Place the prepared filter onto the floor or into lower part of the aquarium cabinet. Cut the tubing and attach one tube to each of the intake ("IN") and outlet ("OUT") hose tail connectors.
After connecting the tubing to the connectors on the lid, tighten the lock nuts on the inlet and outlet hose tails to give an air-tight seal. There should be no kinks in the tubing between the filter and your aquarium. Shorten the tubing if necessary to ensure a direct flow to and from your filter.
7. Attach the intake pipe strainer to the intake tubing. Attach the strainer to the back of your aquarium with two of the suction cups provided.
8. Connect the outlet tubing to the spray bar with the short piece of tube and attach it to the back of the aquarium with the two suction pads provided.
Make sure that you connect the correct end of the spray bar as one end is capped. The spray bar can be fitted either below or above the water line, depending upon the required level of surface agitation required.
8. Starting filtration: Once everything is connected the filter has to be primed. Pump firmly and evenly on the piston located on top of the filter (marked "Jebao" on a silver background) until the cannister is full of water (Note: Initially the piston will be stiff so a firm push will be required). Once full the filter should be able to run just using the manual piston.
Once the water is flowing turn on the power to the pump. Check the spray bar to ensure that there is a flow of water and ensure that there are no air bubbles in the tubing and pipe work. Your filter is now operational.
9. Maintenance: Depending upon the type and size of fish in your aquarium it will be necessary to clean the impeller, filter media and filter box every one or two months. It is recommended that the impeller be changed every 12 months. Filter media should be changed every 2 months.
